The Skills section on LinkedIn isn't just a list of things you can do; it's one of the best ways to get your profile seen. When recruiters look for candidates, they look for skills and keywords. Your skills will determine whether or not your profile shows up in those searches. You have a much better chance of being found for the jobs you want if you choose the right skills and keep them up to date.

To fully leverage this section, it's essential to list your skills and ensure they align with the keywords recruiters are using in their people searches. You can optimize this process with AI-powered tools and make your profile stand out in a crowded job market.

Optimize Your Keywords

To optimize your profile for search engines, ensure your skills section includes keywords frequently used in job descriptions within your industry. AI tools can assist by scanning multiple job listings, extracting the most common and relevant terms, and recommending them for inclusion in your profile. This enhances your chances of appearing in recruiter searches.

Curate Your Skills List

Start by carefully selecting the skills that best represent your expertise and are relevant to your career goals. Prioritize the top 3 skills in demand in your industry, as they will be prominently displayed on your profile. Make sure to include hard skills (technical abilities) and soft skills (interpersonal strengths) to present a well-rounded picture. You can use AI to rank the skills based on your research, but please don’t include skills that you actually don’t have.

Tag Skills to Different Parts of Your Profile

LinkedIn now allows members to tag a skill to any credentials they have obtained and connect their skills to specific jobs, projects, or education directly in their profile.

Keep Your List Relevant and Updated

At least once a quarter, update your skills list to reflect your current expertise and the evolving demands of your industry. As you gain new skills or industry trends shift, adjust your profile to ensure it remains relevant. Colleague endorsements can also enhance the credibility of your listed skills. (Tip: To get endorsements, consider offering them to colleagues first.)

Let AI Review Your List

AI is constantly evolving, and so should your approach to LinkedIn optimization. During your quarterly reviews, revisit your skills section, use AI to assess its effectiveness, and adjust your strategy to keep your profile competitive.

⚙️ Using AI, you can keep your profile fresh and optimized to attract recruiters, giving you a competitive edge in your job search.
